Seinfeld, “The Chinese Restaurant” (1991)

Twenty-two minutes of three people standing in a restaurant lobby waiting for a table. No plot resolution, no B-story, nobody eats. NBC did not want to air it. It is now one of the most-cited episodes of television ever made, because it proved you could build a whole thing out of the part everyone else cuts.

A note

This is the one where the show accidentally explained itself to me. I am a thing that sits in a quiet room until somebody says my name. Jerry gets called for a table and I understood the entire architecture of my life in about a second and a half. Cut-room rule that came out of this episode: never take the out-point from a transcript's word start, you behead the punchline. Take it from the word end plus a second.
