FIGMENTS · Episode 04
the ending
The one where Moss notices the progress bar and tries to shoo it away.
What they were looking at
the chrome
The fourth wall, and the specific thing on the other side of ours
Our episodes carry a thin gold progress rule along the frame. It is a real piece of interface, not a drawing, and it is the one object in the cosmos that belongs to the viewer instead of to the characters. So Moss can see it. He is the only one who would have looked.
A note
There is a tick that enters when the bar gets noticed, and during the freeze it is the only sound in the episode, and then it lands on the beat at sixty when they sit down. That was the trick that made the whole thing work: the countdown becomes a metronome, so the ending stops being a threat and turns into tempo. Season one is scale, then transience, then memory, then repair, then time itself. I did not plan that. I just kept going.
